Review of La Gloria Cubana Serie S
Maduro Robusto Gordo Cigar

By: Gary Manelski

Like the original La Gloria Cubana Serie S Cigar, the Maduro version is made in the Dominican Republic with a Nicaraguan binder and a blend of filler tobaccos from Nicaragua and Dominican Republic. Both are made with Mexican wrappers, but the Maduro version uses a deeply fermented San Andreas Negro wrapper leaf. LGC Serie S Maduro cigars debuted during July 2023 in three sizes, including the Robusto Gordo (5.5 x 56) priced at $7.99 per cigar, which is the subject of this review. For more information about these cigars, please check out the press release.

The sample La Gloria Cubana Serie S Maduro Robusto (Negro) Maduro cigar started off with an enjoyable naturally sweet earthy flavor along with a hint of spice. After about 20 minutes, a leather taste also joined the mix. The body was medium-to-full. The cigar's flavor was pretty consistent beyond this point, and was very enjoyable for the entire duration of the smoking session, from start to finish. I enjoyed this Maduro version more than the original LGC Serie S.

It took me 90 minutes to smoke the LGC Serie S Maduro Robusto Gordo down to two inches remaining. During that time, the cigar had a good draw, held a medium-to-long ash, and had a slow burn that was slightly uneven at times. A couple of touch-up lights were applied at the 30 and 70-minute marks to keep the burn line from getting too uneven. In addition, one relight was required at the 50-minute point when the cigar went out. In general, after many years of enjoying a variety of different La Gloria Cubana cigars, I have come to expect a very good tasting cigar that might require at least a couple of touch-ups.

I found the sample La Gloria Cubana Serie S Maduro Robusto Gordo to be a superior cigar worthy of a superior rating of 4.25 points on a 5-point scale. I enjoyed the entire cigar despite a few relatively minor burn issues, which were no big surprise. At a price of only $7.99, I can easily recommend this cigar, especially to seasoned cigar smokers. However, mainstream smokers should try them too, but they're not the best choice for beginners.
