Review of Punch Wiener Cigars

By: Gary Manelski

Mr. Punch Wieners are limited-edition double-headed Toro sized cigars that are capped on both ends, and can be smoked from either end. They resemble and are packaged like hot dogs. These cigars are made in Honduras with a Dark Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper, US Broadleaf binder, and a blend of Dominican, Honduran, and Nicaraguan filler tobaccos. In addition, half of the cigar contains rare Dominican Andullo filler tobacco that was fermented in palm tree pods for two years. These cigars were released during May 2025 in one Toro (6 x 50) size priced at $6.99 per wiener, and are available in time for Father's Day. For more information about these unusual cigars, please check out the press release.

Before cutting a Punch Wiener Cigar, do not remove the band if you want to keep track of which end you are smoking. One end of the band is blue, and the other is red. After the cigar has been cut, then remove the band before lighting up and roasting your wiener. Only half of the cigar contains some rare full-bodied Domincan tobacco, so to make sure that you are burning it all, cut the red end (making it the head) and light the blue end (making it the foot). Otherwise, some of the Andullo tobacco will remain unsmoked in the nub. Of course, you'll also want to smoke at least one of these cigars the opposite way just to experience the difference. Some smokers may actually prefer starting with a lighter "appetizer" and working their way up (smoking their way down) to the "main course". These wieners can go both ways, so the choice is yours.

[Wiener Food for Thought: Since bands are also put on handmade cigars by hand, and Wiener cigars are capped on both ends that look the same, the consistency of applying the colored bands to properly indicate which half of each cigar contains the Andullo filler would be a daunting task without a reliable process.]

The first sample Punch Wiener Cigar that I puffed from the Red end began with a naturally sweet and full earthy flavor that lasted for 30 minutes before the first ashing. I prefer lighting a closed-foot cigar without cutting off the cap (or excess wrapper) by using a 4-torch cigar lighter and not puffing until the cigar is at least partially lit. This can help to take full advantage of the wrapper's flavor, but is not recommended if using a soft-flame lighter. The smoke was full-bodied right from the start, but not at all overpowering. I did apply one minor touch-up about 5-10 minutes after lighting, but no touch-ups nor relights were required thereafter. The flavor was very rich, sweet and enjoyable during the first 30 minutes and then for another 10 minutes during a flavor transition. Lighting from the Blue end (containing the Andullo filler tobacco) delivered the fullest and most enjoyable flavors right from the start. In addition, since this smoke passes through the other fillers while puffing, the taste of the Andullo filler has at least some effect on the flavors beyond the midpoint of the cigar.

After 30 minutes, the flavor began to transform into a more spicy and woodsy flavor, which gradually replaced the sweet earthy flavors at the beginning. The cigar also burned a bit faster, with a second ashing needed after an additional 20 minutes at the 50-minute mark. The body started approaching the medium-to-full range, but the flavor remained full and enjoyable. This flavor profile remained pretty consistent for the next 30 minutes until the very end, for a total smoke time of 80 minutes down to just under two inches remaining, when the cigar went out by itself.

The sample Punch Wiener cigar was very enjoyable from start to finish, and I was pleasantly surprised by a somewhat gimmicky cigar that is named after a hot dog and priced at only $6.99, but also provided 80 minutes of cigar smoking enjoyment. The cigar had a very good draw, burned evenly (after the first few minutes), and held a very long ash. This cigar is recommended for more seasoned cigar smokers, and can be enjoyed any time during the year and not just for Father's Day or during the summer grilling season. Punch Wieners are limited-edition cigars that should be grabbed now before they are all gone (like the previous two Punch Father's Day cigars in 2023 & 2024). I rate them with a superior 4.25 points on a 5-point scale.
