Review of Macanudo Heritage Nuevo Cigar

By: Gary Manelski

Macanudo Heritage Nuevo is a limited edition cigar that is not quite an alternate version of the popular Macanudo Cafe. The same blend of Dominican and Mexican filler tobaccos are used (along with a special Nicaraguan leaf), but the Connecticut Shade wrapper was replaced by an Ecuadorian Connecticut Shade wrapper.

Macanudo Heritage Nuevo cigars will become available in October 2019 in three vitolas, including a Robusto (5 x 50) priced at $12.99, which was sampled for this review. For more information about these cigars, please refer to the press release.

The sample cigar began with a sweet and nutty flavor that was mild-to-medium bodied. Hints of spice complimented those flavors along the way, and the cigar never had any sour notes. I think that the new Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper was noticeably sweeter than the original Connecticut Shade wrapper, but without having that occasional hint of citrus (and maybe just a tad less creamy and toasty). The wrapper is the most important and expensive tobacco leaf of a cigar, and usually provides approximately half of a cigar's flavor. Although the Macanudo Heritage Nuevo may be similar to the Macanudo Cafe, it is definitely not the same.

It took me between 45 and 50 minutes to smoke the sample down to two inches remaining. However, a relight at that point got me almost an extra 10 minutes down to 1½ inches left. The cigar had a mostly even burn, which did not require any touch-up lights. The draw was very good and provided a nice volume of smoke, and the ash was medium-to-long.

The Macanudo Heritage Nuevo is a very good cigar that would appeal to all levels of cigar smokers, including and especially beginners. However, even experienced connoisseurs can appreciate a milder cigar on occasion. The Heritage Nuevo can accompany beer, champagne or even a light bodied scotch. I rate it with a very good 4 points on a 5-point scale, but note that the price is significantly higher than the original Macanudo Cafe Robusto, which can usually be had for around $8 per stick.
