Quick Review of Joya Red Cigar

By: Gary Manelski

Joya Red cigars are Nicaraguan puros from Joya de Nicaragua. These cigars are available in several vitolas including the Canonazo (5½ x 54) sampled for this short review, priced at about $28 per 5-pack (average of $5.60 per cigar).

The Joyo Red that I smoked was at the lower end of the medium bodied range, and started off with some sweetness and hints of pepper. After a few puffs, the cigar became a bit creamy and remained pretty much consistent thereafter, proving to be an enjoyable summer and/or morning smoke for about the first 15-20 minutes. Beyond that point, the cigar was no longer captivating and for the most part, was just plain uninteresting.

However, since the cigar never really tasted bad, I smoked it all the way down to two inches remaining, which took 75 minutes. During that time, one relight was needed about an hour into the cigar, but no touch-ups were required. The Joya Red had an even burn, held a long ash, and had a good draw. I rate it with a decent 3.25 points on a 5-point scale.
