Review of Excalibur Black Cigar

Hoyo de Monterrey Excalibur Black cigars were introduced in June 2021, and are made in Honduras with a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper, Ecuadorian Sumatra binder, and a blend of Honduran and Nicaraguan ligero filler tobaccos. The cigars are available in three sizes, all priced at less than $9 per stick. This is a review of the Toro size (6 x 52), which is priced at $8.69 per cigar. The sample Excalibur Black Toro cigar started off with a semi-sweet chocolate flavor that was accompanied by a modest amount of spice. The cigar was medium in body and strength, but had a medium-to-full flavor and was very well balanced. The initial taste of spice gradually faded into the background after a few minutes, and by the 15-minute mark, the cigar was noticeably smoother. After another 15 minutes, the Excalibur Black Toro was nice and mellow and had a very enjoyable semi-sweet chocolate flavor with faint hints of spice in the background. By the 45-minute mark, a few notes of citrus entered the mix, as the cigar began to get just a bit stronger, but not at all overpowering.

It took me one full hour to smoke the Excalibur Black Toro cigar all the down to just 1½ inches remaining. During that time, the cigar burned very evenly, had a good draw, and held a long ash. No relights nor touch-ups were needed, as the cigar burned just about perfectly.

I enjoyed the entire Excalibur Black cigar enough to rate it with at least a superior 4.25 points on a 5-point scale overall, but the middle 30 minutes of this cigar deserved closer to an excellent 4.5-point rating. Therefore, at least for now, let's just say that the Excalibur Black Toro is a superior-to-excellent cigar that deserves a rating somewhere between 4.25 and 4.5 points. Excalibur Black is an excellent value at less than $9 per stick, and worthy of a strong recommendation to all levels of cigar enthusiasts, especially connoisseurs and mainstream cigar smokers, as well.
