Review of El Rey del Mundo
King of the World VSOP Cigar

By: Gary Manelski

El Rey del Mundo King of the World VSOP limited-edition cigars are made in Nicaragua with an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper, Nicaraguan Habano binder, and a blend of Nicaraguan and Dominican filler tobaccos. These cigars were rolled during 2021 and have been aging until their release in April 2026. This cigar is available in one Toro size (6 x 52) priced at $10.99 per stick. For more information about these cigars, please see the press release.

The sample El Rey del Mundo King of the World VSOP cigar started off with a spicy taste that was gradually joined by a wood flavor within the first five minutes. After another five minutes, the wood flavor became predominate with the spice gradually moving more into the background. By the 15-minute point, the predominate wood and background spice flavors became nicely balanced and the overall flavor was very enjoyable.

After 30 minutes into the smoking session, I ashed the cigar for the first time. The burn was occasionally a bit uneven prior to the first ashing, and then finally needed a minor touch-up five minutes later. The flavor was still a combination of wood and background spice, and the burn was then pretty much even during the next 25 minutes when I ashed the cigar for the second time. Between the first and second ashings, the texture of the smoke gradually became smoother and creamy along with the continuing flavors of wood and spice. For the most part, the body of the smoke remained in the medium-to-full range, with a few minor fluctuations within that range.

After 70 minutes of smoking time, the cigar went out and required a relight. I continued to smoke it for another 25 minutes down to 1½ inches remaining, resulting in a total smoking time of 95 minutes. The cigar had a good draw throughout the entire smoking session and held a long ash. I rate the El Rey del Mundo King of the World VSOP cigar with a very good to superior 4-plus points on a 5-point scale. Despite a few burn issues, I enjoyed this cigar and definitely consider it to be one of the better ones that I have smoked from the El Rey del Mundo brand during the last few years. It is fuller and more complex than the Shade Grown, and would be most appreciated by seasoned cigar smokers.
