Review of Antonious Cigars From IntercigarBy: Dr. Mitch Fadem Here is another blended by Maurice Koks of Intercigar S.A., in the Dominican Republic. Antonious is named after Maurice’s uncle who died in a fire that nearly destroyed Intercigar. This review covers all three blends in the Robusto size with the following wrappers; Connecticut, Maduro, Habano. The Connecticut is wrapped with a Colorado Claro, Ecuadorian Connecticut Hybrid. The exact blend is proprietary. My best guess is the fillers are Dominican. The Maduro is wrapped with Mexican San Andreas tobacco. Finally the Habano is Ecuadorian Habano. I will review all of these together. Draw and Construction All three cigars have an excellent draw and a well-constructed Cuban triple cap. The Connecticut has a very flaky ash an even burn and burned quickly. It only lasted 40 minutes, a bit disappointing. The Maduro had a very uneven burn that never corrected itself. I did not try to fix it. The ash was better than the Connecticut but it fell off quickly. Smoking time 60 minutes. The Habano was the best of the three, even burn, strong ash and an hour and 15 minutes smoke time…down to one inch. Flavor and Aroma Here is where my subjective opinion comes into focus. Although they are said to be full of flavor, they are flavors I either don’t care for or never became apparent to me. The Maduro and Habano were spicy to the point of being bitter and both had strong leather flavor something I really don’t like. The Connecticut was smoother and lighter but no distinguishable flavor profile. The aroma was as if I was burning wet hay. Value I do not think these are a good value. It is the most expensive cigar in the Intercigar S.A. lineup at $7.00 a stick. Even though the construction would get a 3.75 stars the flavor and aroma would get a 2 star rating. That gives these cigars an overall rating of just under 3 stars and a $7 cigar should be better than that. Just to qualify my opinion I smoked 6 cigars to make my evaluation. All the other Intercigar blends smoked better and if you want a really cigar at a good value from the Dominican Republic, Vallejuelo and Koks y Rojas are worth trying. In fact I just reordered them. |
