I've owned many cigar lighters over the years, and mostly have been torch or jet flame lighters. These lighters have produced anywhere from one to four jet flames. I have also owned a few soft-flame lighters, mostly when I was a new cigar smoker. However, I now actually prefer a soft flame when lighting a cigar indoors, and even sometimes outside to touch-up a cigar that isn't burning evenly. When lighting a cigar outside, a wind resistant torch lighter is almost always required. It is also preferable when lighting cigars having a large ring gauge.
Instead of carrying around a couple of lighters when leaving the house, I recently purchased one dual flame lighter that can produce both a jet and a soft flame. There are several models available online, and I selected a YUSUD Cigar Lighter that was priced at $12.99 on amazon.com*. The lighter runs on butane gas, and there are two separate dials on the bottom of the lighter to adjust the levels of each flame.
The single jet flame works like most other torch lighters, just depress a button and it fires right up. To light the soft flame, you first must turn a separate switch to start the gas, then spin the grinding wheel (like a Bic or Zippo) to light the flame. Turning the switch back to the off position both extinguishes the flame and shuts off the flow of gas.
Although the mechanical flint-wheel ignition system periodically requires replacing a worn out flint, I have found that my old Zippo Blu was much more reliable over time than those lighters that produce an electronic spark. I have also purchased many different brands over the years, including Xikar, Colibri and others. However, even expensive lighters can eventually fail. I've actually had some better luck with a few no-name brands, but only time will tell how long the YUSUD will hold up over time. If it fails, I'll just toss it out and buy a different one. That can be cheaper and easier than packaging and shipping back a more expensive brand every couple of years.
