Review of Diesel Hair of the Dog Cigars

By: Gary Manelski

Released during March 2019, Diesel Hair of the Dog is a limited edition cigar developed by AJ Fernandez. The cigar is made in Nicaragua with an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper, Ecuadorian Sumatra binder, and a blend of Nicaraguan Habano filler tobaccos. Hair of the Dog is available in one size, a box pressed Toro (6 x 54) priced at $10 per stick. Only five thousand boxes containing 10 cigars were made. For more information about these cigars, please see the press release.

The sample cigar began with an enjoyable sweet and peppery flavor that tamed down after 10-15 minutes. A medium-to-full bodied earthy flavor then became predominate, along with some leather and notes of pepper in the background. The cigar had a very good draw, held a long ash, and had an even burn. I applied one very minor touch-up about halfway through, but no relights were needed during the 70 minutes that it took me to smoke the cigar down to two inches remaining.

Since I smoked the sample cigar just a few days after receipt, my preliminary rating of 4 points on a 5-point scale is subject to future adjustment. Subsequent to my review of the Diesel Whiskey Row Cigar that I published last year, the taste of additional samples improved after spending a few weeks in the humidor (sour notes disappeared and the cigar became more mellow). On the other hand, the first sample Diesel Hair of the Dog cigar did not have any sour flavors, and can be enjoyed right out of the box. However, some improvement with age is still expected, and is practically inevitable.
