Review of Room 101 Big Payback Cigar
By: Gary Manelski
The Big Payback is a Nicaraguan puro from Matt Booth, who kept the price of these cigars low to payback his customers for buying his cigars and making him the success in the cigar industry that he is today. Sounds like a good concept to me. The Big Payback is available in three sizes, including the Robusto that I sampled, which measures five inches in length with a ring gauge of 50. The Robusto size is named the Chavala, and is priced around $5 per cigar.
I found this cigar to be medium-to-full bodied, with very pleasant sweet, spicy, and earthy flavors that were pretty consistent throughout the entire smoke. The flavor reminded me a little of the New World Cigar, which is also a value-priced Nicaraguan puro. The Big Payback had a good draw, held a medium-to-long ash, and had a decent burn. The cigar did not require any relights, but three minor touch-up lights were applied to keep the burn even during the 50 minutes that it took me to smoke the cigar down to two inches remaining.
I enjoyed this cigar almost as much as the New World, and rate it with a strong and solid four points on a 5-point scale. Although not very complex, The Big Payback is simply enjoyable and definitely worth a try. A very good cigar at a very good price from Room 101 and Matt Booth.
