Cigar Health Information

According to the National Cancer Institute: There is no safe tobacco product, and there is no safe level of exposure to tobacco smoke. Does this mean that if you just smell the smoke from someone else's cigar, you're doomed? There have been a number of studies over the years, and a number of ways to interpret the results of those studies. Although the stats keep changing, one factor remains obvious: The more cigars you smoke, the higher the risk to your health.

So now you are thinking, what is the maximum number of cigars I should smoke per week or per day? Before setting a limit on the number of cigars you smoke, first and foremost, do NOT inhale. Cigars are not substitutes for cigarettes, and are meant to be enjoyed for their flavor (for more on this, read advice for cigar smokers). And secondly, consider cigars to be a special treat, like ice cream for example. If you smoke cigars all the time, then you are smoking out of habit, and will enjoy it less. Too many cigars, too much ice cream, and just about too much of anything can't be good for you. You don't need Big Brother to tell you that.

"The dose makes the poison" - Paracelsus (early 1500's), the father of toxicology.

The maximum number of cigars to smoke depends on you, as an individual. Some people with preexisting health conditions should not smoke any cigars at all. When in doubt, ask your physician. Some folks smoke less than 10 cigars per year, or only on special occasions. However, average healthy people can most likely enjoy one or two cigars per week without jeopardizing their health, at least not to any significant degree. If you are willing to accept a marginally higher degree of risk to your health, then no more than one cigar per day on average (5 to 10 cigars per week) is probably the most you should consider. There are people who smoke much more than that, but then again, it's their life and their own decision to make.
